What exactly is a Literature Review?

Answer

A literature review is an overview and critical analysis of scholarly materials that have been produced on a particular topic.  The scope of a literature review will vary greatly depending on the reason it is written, e.g. as stand-alone assignment for a course, or as a chapter within a dissertation or thesis.
